History of Aberdeen Project Promoting the Youth or HAPPY is one of the first community projects founding member Michael Harper implemented. It started in 2018. Also, GACC founding member Shelton Tucker was called on to be a subject matter expert to provide important data on the history of Aberdeen. The project included district 10 students from: Aberdeen Elementary, Lindsey Middle, Hampton and Bethel High School.
The purposes of the project were to task our youth to learn the more about the Greater Aberdeen communities and there by create a pride for community's culture and history. As we were at the start of COVID-19, we observed the virus federal mandates utilizing such precautions as: social distancing, outdoor field trips and Zoom calls. At the end of the project, each school together gave a Zoom presentation. Each participating student received a T-shirt, certificate, plaque and $50 gift card. The project was a success, and we plan to make it an annual event.
